Breast reduction is another important method of surgical correction, pursuing, in addition to an aesthetic goal, also a therapeutic one. Breast hypertrophy, which is very common in older women and often in young patients, is a serious problem leading to increased stress on the spine and muscle hypertonicity, as well as preventing an active lifestyle and making it difficult to diagnose pathologies.

Plastic surgery for breast reduction is considered the most difficult among the types of mammoplasty. First of all, because of the difficulties associated with maintaining normal blood circulation. In fact, breast reduction involves the removal of excess adipose tissue and excess skin, that is, it combines liposuction and a lift.

Definition of indications and preparation for surgery

When determining the feasibility of carrying out and choosing the type of plastic surgery for breast reduction, the following are taken into account:

  • causes of hypertrophy;
  • the degree of breast augmentation;
  • the presence of mastopexy;

The cause of breast hypertrophy, along with a genetic predisposition, may be a hormonal imbalance, therefore, before the operation, it is necessary to identify the cause and correct hormonal disorders. Otherwise, the breast will increase even after the operation. Hypertrophy of the mammary glands during the bearing and feeding of a child is most often reversible. Therefore, it is worth talking about conducting reduction mammoplasty only six months after the complete completion of lactation.

Regarding the degree of mammary gland hypertrophy, there are generally accepted objective criteria: normally, the volume of one breast should not exceed 300 cm3. However, when determining the indications for surgery, not only the absolute size of the gland is taken into account, but also its relationship with the growth of the patient and the volume of the chest itself.

Methods of plastic surgery and postoperative scars

The success of the operation is largely determined by the correct choice of technique for its implementation, so the main task of the plastic surgeon is to choose which parts of the skin to remove.

With a slight correction, as a rule, a technique is chosen with the preservation of the upper-lower feeding flaps. In this case, the rehabilitation period after breast reduction is short, and the scars are hardly noticeable and are located only in the peripapillary region.

Removal of lateral, upper-lateral and lower flaps is used if a larger correction is required. These types of interventions are more difficult, and therefore require more time for postoperative recovery. The postoperative scar in this case surrounds the areola and goes down in the form of an inverted “T”.
In any case, postoperative scars are located in such a way that they can be hidden under clothing and a swimsuit. The aesthetics and functionality of the postoperative scar is determined not only by the surgical technique. Much depends on the patient’s compliance with medical recommendations in the postoperative period and the individual characteristics of the connective tissue. If there is a tendency to form hypertrophic scars, additional preventive measures are involved.

Reduction mammoplasty can hardly be called a simple operation, however, in the case of unequivocal indications, it is undoubtedly worth deciding on. After all, the consequences in the form of diseases not detected in time, violations of posture and osteochondrosis of the cervicothoracic region can be much more serious.
